The 80s Server

The 80s Server

Concepted:
March 3rd, 1995

Created:
Continually over a course of two years.
March 6, 1995-November 28th, 1996.
Site was sold to Multi Service, Inc.

Development team:
Ken M. Wilson, Scott Murdock, Stephen Willis.

Focus:
Attempting to build a community around the pop-culture of the years 1980-1989, the team was met with much more success than originally planned. With nearly 15,000 repeat visitors daily from 64 countries around the world in late 1996 (when Ken and Scott left the site), The 80s Server was ranked alongside "You Don't Know Jack", Nintendo 64 and WebTV as People Magazine's "Best of Bytes" in its year-end issue.

The site's main draw was a combination of entertaining games that changed on a daily or weekly basis, humorously addictive applications, and a very active message board which allowed the site's visitors to converse on a wide-range of subjects from the 1980s.

Highlight:
Winning InfiNet's "Cool Site of the Day" award on July 31st, 1996 after the site's visitors joined together and bombarded InfiNet with e-mails demanding the site be recognized. A spokesman for "Cool Site of the Day" said that the e-mails numbered "into the thousands" and were too numerous to count.
